CCR essay

For a music video we shot half of our music video on location we thought because our genre is indie rock a urban scenery would compliment and represent it well so we went into our nearest town when it was dark and thousands of single frame photos. Reason that we try to do single frame photos was to give it a bit more of an edge and an interesting look as they are an indie band they are a little bit different and we thought that this would pair well with the genre.

In our music campaign we chose to represent our lead singer in a rebellious fashion to go in line with our indie rock genre one way in which we helped to represent this was through our use of single farm camera work that we did on location we did this to create a sense of urgency and chaos playing into the rebellious stereotype. It is common for younger people in media to be portrayed as antisocial and this was also shown through the use of location and time of shooting as we shot at night and there were jumping over things suggesting their anti-social behaviour. In terms Digi Pak we went in further with the rebellious stereotype it includes images of them out at night also the font is similar to the graffiti style hinting at them being unruly, however as our band would attract a younger audience, we did not want to make the images to intense as we wanted to it to appeal to parents who would buy it for their kids. There age was father represented through the use of their social media we wanted to include things that were related to the times one post included a screenshot of a covid test and this created a sense of the band wanting to look after their community and also show how important it is for people to test often which reflects their generation Z mindset. We kept the bands social media rather light and fun as we wanted to draw in our target audience and we didn't want it come across too serious This further reflects there age in the sense that they don't take life too seriously and they just want to have fun.

The bands star persona was very outgoing, rebellious and a little bit quirky. for our logo of our band, we wanted to create something that was quite simple but could stand out and be iconic, we wanted to merge the genre and also the band image. we did a lot of research into other bands who had similar music and we studied there logo and noted things that stood out this helped us in piecing together our logo we wanted it to use and represent the stereotypes off our band to really help sell it the bull one the front suggests danger, rebellious behaviour, high energy and an out-of-control nature, however on the other side the roses placed on the bulls head suggests a sense of calming and peace this side gravitates more to the Indie part of the genre and states that even though they are an all boy rebellious band that they are kind and can be calm and peaceful. Dyer star believed that the way that the band is perceived is constructed by reminding the audience off their visual image of the band for this we had to make sure that all our branding was consistent throughout all of our products including our music video our digipak and also our social media, throughout we wanted to continue the themes of rebellious behaviour. For our music video it is common for young artist in rock genres to be very high energy we represented this through our short duration shots throughout the video which helped tie in our branding with our logo which had the bull also representing this, also in the way they dressed we wanted our band too look trendy and with the times and also relatable as they are a young band and their target audience is younger adults so their costumes are quite simple but also trendy. The way in which we represented our branding in our social media was that we kept our band’s Twitter an Instagram very light-hearted we wanted to give off a sense of a high energy funny teenage persona which trickled through all of our individual products.

Uses and gratifications was a theory created by Blumber and Katz they believe that there are four reasons why people consume media one of these points is personal identity when creating our music campaign, we felt that this aspect was very important we wanted our audience to be able to relate to the band we tried to tie this in with all three of our products, the opening of our music video is a tracking shot on the lead singer that opens up a white door to reveal the rest of the band this symbolises that they could be in a basement or in a bedroom representing a start-up young teenage band which lots of young people could relate to who are also in a young band this will help them engage with their audiences as they have things in common. Their social media was also very upbeat it showed the individual band members personalities it was extremely important for us because we wanted them to come across as just normal teenagers and not so prestige to really help their target audiences' engagement. Our digipak also engages some target demographic, teenage girls by the signatures on the back of the digipak each band member put a signature this will make them feel like they directly communicating with them making them feel like they have a personal relationship with the band members increasing the bands engagement with their audience.

As a new band it was important that we followed conventions, we did a lot of research into our products before we created them we looked at other bands similar to ours who had been successful and took inspiration from things that they had created, this included are for products I was social media or music video our digipak and our merchandise. All digipak I looked at three different bands Arctic Monkeys the killers and the strokes these were all bands that followed a similar genre to our band their artwork heavily influenced the way we did our digipak a lot of their artwork was quite simple there wasn't a huge amount going on and there was usually a focus on one thing that's what we took for our own we had one image that had the main focus plus our band name and the title of the album. Our music video we did heavy research into four bands who again had the same genre and we looked this time specifically at songs that followed a similar vibe these bands were the Arctic Monkeys the strokes, cage the elephant and finally the two door cinema club I analysed each of these videos in great detail looking at what they were wearing looking at different types of props looking at locations, we also took in consideration how the band members were placed and well then make up was like we took notes on the bands demeanour how they were interacting with each other how the bands videos were edited what the lighting was like how the camera moved how the camera picked up what they were doing what types of shots they were using all of this research was used to influence our end video, we took a lot of inspiration mainly from bands the Arctic Monkeys and the strokes as this is the sort of look we wanted to go for in terms of our music video we very much used the classic conventions of an indie rock band we didn't stray four out of the conventions and we rarely challenged them in the video side of things. We looked at the theorist Andrew Goodwin we used the theory of disjunction are videos visual did not run in parallel with the lyrics we chose to do this as it is more common for indie rock videos to go away from illustration videos as it is important to show the band as a band playing together and it's hard to follow a narrative when this is something that you need to include. We also studied the social media of guns and roses we looked at how they marketed and used branding in their social media leading up to an event we also looked at how they interacted and engaged with their audience to help excel their product here we really use the conventions of classic indie band we discussed matters different to music we had lots of personal posts directed at the band we wanted our post to consistently be different to one another so it would be more interesting for the audience we also wanted to reach the right type of people so we used hashtags that would stereotypically be used in this type of setting to help reach the audience that we want to have.

Process of social media (photo shoot)

 photo shoot

For our social media we booked in the photography studio to take some good quality photos to put on our Instagram and Twitter. We did this photo shoot to make the band look professional and also something to show off their personalities a little bit more. We set up all the lighting and also prepared the background for the shoot we also used a number of props to keep the shoot fun and to come out with some really interesting and cool photos.

I created a behind the scenes video from our photo shoot here is the video:

Process of social media

 making the posts

as I was doing the Twitter account I had lots of different ways of posting I could include pictures small videos I could retweet other things from other bands and other artists or other people in general and also I could come out with statements. I show you how I uploaded my posts and what type of things I would include when posting about the band.

Process of social media

 downloading apps:

For social media I also downloaded some editing apps to help edit the photos to make them look more professional. obviously to start my social media campaign I had to download Twitter but you cannot edit photos in huge detail on Twitter so I downloaded an app called VSCO, This allowed me to edit the photos in more detail and also provided me with more philtres and things to add to the photo to make them more appealing to the eye and also to make my social media look more put together.

here is an example of how I used this app:

first group campain feedback

After my first draught of social media I went to my group for feedback they said that all of my posts so far were relevant to The concept of the video, They thought that the way that I had retweeted other peoples posts was original and different too everyone else is social media, they also mentioned that the genre of the band was made clear and they could understand the type of music that they would come out with and play, things to improve on is to do a proper photo shoot to get some good quality images and get images of the band altogether and also to maybe not include photos of other bands who already have a big image for example my post on the Arctic Monkeys.

In conclusion they thought that it was a good starting point and what I've done so far was good and to carry on how I was but make it look a little bit more professional and put together which will come with the photo shoot.

planning photo shoot for social media and digipak

For our digipak and some of our social media, we decide to do a photoshoot with our whole band we booked the photography studio for an afternoon we then messaged the band to let them know we wanted them out of there costumes that they wore for the music video so they all the social media and digipak wasn’t the same.

Merchandise design

 Merchandise design:

for the merchandise design we wanted to include there logo from the band:

campaign on social media

campaign social media

For the campaign I have been given the role to set up and run the band's Twitter account so today I set up the Twitter account we came up with the band name and I named the Twitter the sleeves official I gave them a bio saying “we are a indie rock band from England we have just released on new debut album we will know stream now across all platforms”.

here is me setting up the Twitter account:

First of all I had to put end my name my number and the date I was born:

But I had to put in the variation code I got sent through text:\

I then added a profile picture:

Then I made that username:

And then I did there bio:

feedback on digipak desigh

I showed my group and also my teacher what I had done in terms of my album artwork design I designed a front cover an inside left cover in inside right cover and also a back cover.

when being given feedback on the front cover they said that They liked the font that I had chosen for the bad name but for the song name they wanted it to be placed somewhere different on The front cover also as a band. on my there is only the guitarist and they suggested because it is a band that they should either have the lead singer or they should have the entire band on the front or something that symbolises the entire band. Because we haven't done a photo shoot yet I couldn't get a photo or The band together and I had to use a photo from the shoot which doesn't look like an album artwork. However they really liked the colour scheme and the lighting they said that it worked very well.

In terms of the inside left cover they said that they I really liked the design that I had done they said I eventually worked very well as I used a drum kit as the round part of the CD and because it's using instruments incorporated in the cover is a way to symbolise this. however it was a slightly different colour scheme to the front but they did say that it's not hugely important it just matters that the two inside covers are the same colour scheme and they can be slightly different to the two external covers.

when it came to my right inside cover they also really really liked the design however again it was another photo from the shoot so I would have to do something similar in a different location in a different outfit but they still really really liked it. they like how it was really over exposed and they said if I made everything else a little bit lighter it would really fit into the colour scheme and they would all go really well together.

they said that the back cover looked a lot more like a band than the front cover did and it could possibly work as a front cover. A downside is that I forgot to add the parental advisory and the barcode and also because we haven't really come up with all the names to the songs yet I couldn't add the names in however I still laid it out the same. They also suggested that if I expand the beam of light I could possibly add attract list into that beam of light to make it look more visually pleasing and also more central.

Overall I think that they all really liked it they said that the inside right inside left and the back cover all Went together and that the front was a little bit too dark which I definitely agree with in terms of looking forward into the future I would need to recreate all these photos in a studio instead of straight from the video but this is not a problem because we have a shoot planned for next week where I can change this.

research into social media (guns and roses)

For my research into similar bands artists social medias I have chosen the killers and also guns and roses the killers an indie rock band and guns and roses are more of a rock band they both have recent posts on their social media and they frequently interact with their audiences and come out with campaigns and tours and live shows so I thought they would be perfect to do my social Media Research on them they're also all boy bands lit is the same as our band.

Guns and roses have 2.4 million followers on Instagram and they have 2127 posts they have many different stories about that tour that 2022 told the 2021 tour they have the greatest hits they have a 2020 tour. You can tell by these posts that they keep that audience informed and also up to date as well as it's a place for their fanbase to look back on that recent and future tours.

here is a timeline leading up to their most recent live tour.

shoot day reflection

My shoot the reflection

I felt that on our shoot day we worked extremely well as a team and I am very happy and proud of what we came out with he worked extremely hard all day to come out with the best video we possibly could and I feel like we have achieved this, we made sure that all our shortlists and shooting schedule were printed out ready for us so we were ready to start as soon as possible, For our first set up we had all the band in the same room with no set and we used the black curtains as a backdrop this took very little time to set up so we could quickly get started on the lighting it took us quite a while to get used to lighting and find the states that we felt fit our video well we played around a lot with the colouring and took our time in deciding what would fit best throughout our video we used a lot of heavy strobe lighting and we had to work very hard in making sure that the strobe wasn't coinciding with the shutter speed on the camera otherwise we would see nothing and this is something that I took away from the shoot at learned as I did not know this before. it took us quite a while to get the lighting right but once we had it we are very happy with what we had and we were glad that we spent the time that we did on it.

We then set up the corridor with the door at the end leading into the open space we had to do quite a lot of adjusting on the day as because we spent a lot of time the lighting, we ran out of time to do all of our setups however in the end we felt that this worked better and made more sense in the narrative of the video in this section we use some of the fluorescent tubes as lighting. Do a lot of playing around with the positioning of the cast members to make it look put together, lots of playing around on how we can use the door and we did some really cool shots with the door oh we were very happy with the outcome.

The next part of the shoot was when we went on location, we all drove into Guildford we had pre planned all our locations and so we parked and started straight away we used a single frame camera to take the shots of them in Guildford your single frame camera work to create the effect Of them jumping around and it gave the pre-existing footage a bit of texture I made it look really cool every time we do a sexually stop and look at what we had and if we like what we had we would then carry on the single frame camera work really fit their style let's be careful in Guildford as we were out when it was dark so we had to watch out for cars and other members of the public but we felt that we handled this really well and we got lots of amazing footage, I think because we were outside the band also really able to relax and they were really acting like they were a band this made it a very smooth experience.

In conclusion I think that as agreed we worked very well together we managed to overcome any issues and problems that came along the way and we were able to adapt to anything that didn't quite workout we felt that we were well prepared and well equipped for our shoot day and we also had an amazing time shooting the video and we are very proud of what we have achieved we did have to shoot a little bit a few days later of just the guitarist and lead vocalist as we did run out of time so something that I would improve would be hard management I'm making sure that we are sticking to a strict schedule.

social media within a music campaign

They use their social media platforms to market and distribute their content it is a way for them to reach a wide target audience and also grow their audience. Marketing the albums and their campaigns through social media give them a freeway for people to engage themselves with the band it costs nothing for people to follow to share to like and this is always that bands can grow and excel. This is also a very quick way in which bands can market what they're coming out with as it takes just minutes to upload a post and just seconds to upload a story. Also by making their account public anybody can see this meaning they can reach a really wide audience.

For our band we will definitely be using many different social media platforms to market that album especially because our band is a smaller band it's less well known it means they don't have to spend any money on marketing and also it gives them the opportunity to possibly go viral which we have seen in the recent years with people like Jayden who when viral through tick tock and also bands like Manskin we started off on Eurovision but people on tik tok created videos of them and made their band go huge. This is also a way for our band to show people what they're really like and create a reputation for themselves. through pictures and videos and stories they can really express who they are as a band and what they stand for this is really good in terms of drawing in a target audience because people will be able to see what they're like and what type of genre of music they create this will then result in them growing a small fanbase which will hopefully grow bigger in time to come.

In terms of posting about band upcoming album there is a big lead up in the posts before the album release this process should start a few months before hinting at a release date or giving subtle hence that something might be coming out this helps their target audience get excited and in some cases pre save the album giving the band early revenue and also shows them how many people would be interested. They can do this through stories and also through Instagram posts also giving hints through Twitter small captions things like that will get their fanbase and audiences attention this will all help to the buildup of their release and then for their actual release day a a month or so beforehand they will release the release day and this is where they can give bigger hints and then releasing the album artwork and maybe some of the names of the songs and then on the release day they do a big post about the album.

Digipak concept idea for campaign

 Front cover

Digipak research of my genre

For our album artwork we want to keep include lots of dark tones And we want it to have a urban city feel as this is what are music video is like and also the genre of music. in terms of artwork I feel like our covers shouldn't be too busy and be quite simple and minimalistic as this song is very chaotic I think having a more toned down I'm at work cover would be better suited.

Some out of artworks that I have researched into are the killers album artworks their album artwork is very simple and they have a running theme with there font this creates not only continuity between the albums but also is something for their fans to recognise every time they see that font they think of the killers it's almost like their logo like for example The Rolling Stones they have an iconic image that people know them for and anytime anyone sees that logo they'll think of the rolling stones and anytime anyone sees that logo they'll think of The Rolling Stones so even though we are only creating album artwork for one album I think having something on there that could be repeated in future albums would be a good idea.

This strokes album artwork is a very striking image it's very dark and very simplistic there's not a huge amount going on so you can really focus on the main image.

The Arctic Monkeys album artwork it's also very simplistic and minimalistic on one of the covers that is just a symbol in black and white with the band name on the front in an interesting font and on the other one it's the lead person in the band and it's just a portrait of them again this is in black and white this is definitely some key inspiration for my album artwork design.

Some key conventions of album artwork in my genre are dark tones they usually have the band on the front and they I usually positioned with the singer more predominantly in the front or the person that's more well known on the front. this is to help sell the album as usually it's not necessarily the look of the problem it's more who is in the band.

Things that you need to include on your album artwork is the name of the band the name of the song you need all the legal information on the back if this song has explicit words than it needs a parental advisory sticker on the front on the back there needs to be a list of all the songs and the track numbers and also it needs to include a barcode on the back.

Keeping a running theme throughout my campaign is very important I think that in terms of my album artwork I'll keep the colour schemes very similar to the colour of all music video shoot it was black and white and also had glimpses of blue in there I think if I do it through the colour it's subtle but also enough to pick up they are altogether. And also using the actual band members in the all work will also bridge the gap.

shot list

Here is my shot list this is going to help our shoot day run smoothly its to make sure we keep on top of our shots and also gives us prompts of what we need to include in the shots. It is also important to have this so we can let our cast know when they are needed and we can prepare them for when they are in set and to get them in costume. and especially Because we go to a location later in the day we need to make sure we are all on schedule so we don’t overrun.
